TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Protesters have called for Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz to resign over how he has handled the case of a 73-year-old reserve deputy who fatally shot a suspect while the unarmed man was being held down by two others.
At least 200 people gathered late Friday near the county courthouse to protest the April 2 death of Eric Harris by the volunteer deputy, Robert Bates. Protesters then marched to the sheriff's office, calling on Glanz to step down.
A spokesman for the sheriff's office declined to comment Friday on the calls for Glanz's resignation.
Bates, who served as Glanz's re-election campaign manager in 2012, has said he mistakenly pulled out a handgun rather than a stun gun as Harris lay on the ground. Bates has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.
