Tulsa, Ok – Mayor Bartlett Announces June 23 as Olympic Day

Mayor Dewey Bartlett announced today that June 23 is the worldwide commemoration Olympic Day of Baron Pierre de Coubertin's June 23, 1894, convening of the first International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris, and the founding of the Modern Olympic Games. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) throughout the world will also participate in the international celebration, with each Olympic Committee sending Olympic Day greetings to participating nations.

"Olympic Day is a great opportunity for us to take stock of our daily physical activities and eating habits - we all need to get lean and healthy for life. The Olympics also stir a sense of pride in us for the achievements of our Olympic athletes, as well as a spirit of unity in this inspiring movement that seeks to bring about a more positive and peaceful world," said Mayor Bartlett.

Tulsa will celebrate its own Olympic Day next month at the Saint Francis Health Zone Summer Olympics with Shane Hamman, an Olympian in Weightlifting during the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. Mayor Dewey Bartlett's wife, Victoria Bartlett will join Shane Hamman on July 16 for this special Olympic Day event in Tulsa.
