A Tulsa teenager has been sentenced to prison for a shooting and wounding a former UFC fighter and his son during a robbery attempt.
Harold Thompson, 17, was sentenced as an adult to serve 35 years in prison on Thursday after entering blind guilty pleas for assault and battery with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery with a firearm, and possession of a firearm after juvenile adjudication, the Tulsa World reported.
Police allege Thompson approached former pro fighter Mikey Burnett in a parking lot and asked to borrow his phone on Feb. 29, 2016. Investigators allege Thompson then drew a gun and demanded Burnett turn over his wallet, and Burnett was shot multiple times as he tried to move the gun away from his face.
Burnett's son, Freddie, was shot in the leg when he tried to intervene. Police allege Thompson fled in a vehicle with two co-defendants.
Thompson's attorney, Brian Martin, asked the judge to consider his client's age and requested a realistic opportunity for Thompson's release. But Assistant District Attorney Kevin Keller requested a lengthy sentence, saying the case involved "completely innocent victims" who were shot "for essentially no reason."
Thompson was initially charged as a juvenile before prosecutors amended the case to allow him to face an adult sentence.
Speaking from the bench to Thompson, District Judge William Musseman said "the ink wasn't even dry" on a juvenile court judgment and sentence he'd received for an unrelated burglary charge four days before the shootings.
Another 17-year-old co-defendant pleaded guilty to his role in the crime in May, and was ordered to spend a decade in prison. A third suspect, 31-year-old Otelia Warrior, was charged with attempted robbery on accusations that she drove the getaway car. Warrior was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to reduced charges in September.
