TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office says it will conduct an internal review of its reserve deputy program after a 73-year-old volunteer officer fatally shot an unarmed suspect who was on the ground.
Spokesman Shannon Clark told the Tulsa World Thursday that there will be an audit, but he did not discuss details.
Clark did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press.
Reserve deputy Robert Bates was charged Monday in the death of 44-year-old Eric Harris, who authorities say tried to sell guns to an officer. They say Bates accidentally shot Harris after mistakenly grabbing his handgun rather than a stun gun.
A state legislator called Thursday for an independent investigation into the shooting by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the Oklahoma attorney general's office.
