Tulsa Board to Consider School Name Changes

Tulsa Public Schools

Four Tulsa schools may get new names. Columbus, Lee, Jackson and Chouteau are on the list that will be presented to the Tulsa School Board on Monday evening. The schools are named for Christopher Columbus, Robert E. Lee, Andrew Jackson and Jean-Pierre Chouteau.

Columbus was on the list for his mistreatment of natives when he arrived in the Americas in 1492.  Robert E. Lee owned slaves and was a Confederate General. Andrew Jackson and Jean-Pierre Chouteau were known for their mistreatment of Native Americans. Jackson also owned slaves.

The board will discuss the renaming changes during a March 5 meeting. Any action by the board would not be expected until the March 15th meeting, at the earliest.
