Tulsa Ballet Presents "The Sleeping Beauty"

By Rich Fisher

Tulsa, Oklahoma – On today's StudioTulsa, we hear from Marcello Angelini, who has been the Artistic Director of Tulsa Ballet since 1995. Tulsa Ballet will present "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center throughout the coming weekend, on February 12th, 13th, and 14th. (For tickets, show times, or other information, call 918-596-7111 or visit myticketoffice.com.) Famous for its fairy-tale narrative concerning a spell, a princess, and a kiss --- and for its music, by Tchaikovsky --- this ballet is actually one of the more demanding or difficult works (from a dance perspective) in the entire canon. As Angelini tells our host Rich Fisher on today's program, dancers performing this work invariably feel "exposed" while onstage. Angelini's version of this masterpiece, inspired by the original 1890 version by Marius Petipa, will feature grand staging, striking sets, and beautifully crafted costumes. And Tchaikovsky's score will be performed by the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra at each of this weekend's three presentations.
