Tahlequah, OK – Okla. tribe chief nominates lawyer to be tribal AG

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker has announced his choice for the tribe's next attorney general.

Baker said in a statement released Friday that he will nominate Tahlequah lawyer Todd Hembree to be the successor to A. Diane Hammons, whose term expired last year.

According to the statement, Hembree has been a practicing attorney for more than 20 years and has served as independent counsel for the Cherokee Nation's legislative branch for 12 years.

He grew up in the town of Greasy in southern Adair County and graduated from Stilwell High School, Northeastern State University and the University of Notre Dame Law School.

Hembree will go before the Tribal Council's Rules Committee on January 26th. If confirmed, he will go before the full council in February.
