TPS Reaction to Probation Story

Tulsa, OK – For immediate release: The Oklahoma State Department of Education's announcement Thursday regarding school districts placed on accreditation probation is based upon data from the 2007-2008 school year. Tulsa Public Schools administrators were aware of the deficiencies at nine of 85 accredited sites that led to the probation.

The district has improved from a high of 37 on the list of schools in need of improvement to 11 last year. Preliminary figures indicate, when state test scores are released in August, we will have reduced that number to five or six schools (out of 85) in need of improvement.

To further ensure student success, TPS has developed partnerships with Teach for America, America's Choice and AVID Learning to implement relevance and rigor in the classroom and provide quality learning experiences for all students. We fully expect student performance to continue to improve in the coming school year.

Thank you,
