TPS Gets Wellness Grant From Tobacco Settlement Trust

Oklahoma’s Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust is giving Tulsa Public Schools $50,000.

The money will help the district provide physical and nutritional education, as well as counseling services. Child Nutrition Director Kit Hines said it will also help TPS start an employee wellness program.

"We're going to probably start that with some yoga classes ... and just continue to expand on that," Hines said.

The grant will help improve the district’s existing nutrition and physical education programs.

"In the last year, we streamlined it and made it stronger and healthier message," Hines said. "We're really excited to promote that message to the students and to staff."

Hines said TPS has a sizable student population that wouldn’t otherwise learn about good nutrition. TPS was among four districts given grants totaling $61,000. TPS received the largest grant from TSET during this round of awards.

The TPS grant was among $171,000 awarded by TSET through its Healthy Community and Health Schools incentive grant programs.
