Norman, OK – Family links suicide of 19-year-old to gay debate

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Members of a 19-year-old gay man who recently committed suicide say they think a debate about homosexuality he witnessed at Norman City Council meeting may have pushed him to take his own life.

The Norman Transcript reports that Zach Harrington committed suicide just a week after he attended a council meeting where many members of the public spoke out for and against a proclamation to recognize October as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender History Month.

Opponents of the measure voiced strenuous opposition, some saying they based their sentiments on the Bible.

The council eventually approved ther proclamation on a 7-1 vote.
