StudioTulsa on Health: Discussing the Status Quo of Sports Medicine

On this edition of ST on Health, we welcome Dr. Lamont Cavanagh, a Tulsa-based family physician who specializes in sports medicine, and who also works as an assistant professor at the OU-Tulsa School of Community Medicine. Moreover, Dr. Cavanagh spent five years as an U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, and he's now chief of aerospace medicine for the 138th Fighter Wing of the Oklahoma Air National Guard. Today, he chats with guest host John Henning Schumann about the latest in sports medicine in America today --- including the idea of "exercise as medicine," the occasional phenomenon of over-training, the unfortunately common presence of performance-enhancing drugs, the alarming rise of concussions in contact sports at all levels, and other trends. Dr. Cavanagh also describes why athletes --- and members of the Armed Forces --- tend to be, from the doctor's point of view, outstanding if not ideal patients. (You can read a full "bio" for Dr. Cavanagh here.)
