Stranded in the Snow

Lawton, OK – 17 stranded motorists rescued in Comanche County

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Emergency management officials in Comanche County say they have rescued 21 motorists stranded on roadways in southwestern Oklahoma choked by heavy snow from a fierce winter storm.

Chris Killmer, the county's public information officer, says 17 motorists were rescued Thursday by a crew of transportation and emergency personnel from the county and city of Lawton.

Sixteen were taken by bus to a shelter at the Lawton High School gymnasium and one was dropped off at his house.

Killmer says another four stranded motorists were rescued by a separate team.

Killmer says all of the stranded motorists were found along Interstate 44 and Oklahoma Highway 7, which have been closed due to heavy snow accumulations and dangerous driving conditions.

He says all appeared to be in good condition.
