CHECOTAH, Okla. (AP) — Three volunteer firefighters were transported to a hospital with heat exhaustion after fire broke out on a tanker truck delivering fuel to a grocery store.
Checotah's emergency manager, Leslie Phillips, says the fire started about 1 p.m. Wednesday outside a grocery store between Chocotah and Eufaula in McIntosh County. The tanker was carrying about 4.500 gallons of fuel and was attempting to offload it when the fire started.
No one was injured by the fire itself, but Phillips says three firefighters who helped fight it suffered from heat exhaustion. He says as many as 50 volunteer firefighters responded to the blaze.
Phillips says flames caused some damage to the store before the fire was put out shortly after 5 p.m. He says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
