Oklahoma City, Ok – Gloria Steinem, a political activist and journalist, will be visiting Oklahoma City next week to honor the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation, Wilma Mankiller.
Steinem will be the guest of honor at Oklahoma City University, where they will be hosting a tree planting ceremony. The event will take place at 11 am on Thursday in the center of campus, just north of the campus chapel, and will be open to the public. Steinem was among the dignitaries that spoke during Mankiller's memorial service in April of 2010.
Mankiller was the chief of the Cherokees from 1985 to 1995, and led the tribe in tripling its enrolment, doubling employment, and building new health centers and children's programs. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.
