Shooting Spree at Muskogee Mall

By Associated Press

Muskogee, OK – 1 dead in shooting at Muskogee, Okla.

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) A Muskogee, Okla., police spokesman says one person is dead and five or six have been injured in a shooting inside the downtown Arrowhead Mall, crowded with visitors attending the annual Azalea Festival.

Shoppers who were inside the mall were told by a public-address announcement to leave as quickly as possible, and gathered outside the mall. Several said they heard four or five shots just before the announcement about 4:15 p.m.

Police spokesman Pedro Zardeneta confirmed the death and "maybe five, maybe six" people injured. He said police do not know yet if the person killed was among those doing the shooting, or was a bystander.

Zardeneta said several people were involved in the shooting, and witnesses thought a gunfight was under way. He said there were reports of shots fired elsewhere in the city after the mall shooting, but those reports haven't been confirmed.
