Serial Rape Suspect in Custody

Oklahoma Department of Corrections

Tulsa police say they have their man in a string of rapes and sexual assaults committed over the last month.

"The person charged is Desmond L. Campbell. He's an African-American male, light-skinned, 30 years of age," Chief Chuck Jordan said at a news conference this afternoon. "He has prior convictions in Oklahoma City for attempted robbery, attempted kidnapping and robbery, and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

"He was released from prison on April 21 of this year."

The district attorney’s office will file charges in seven cases against Campbell. Jordan said they found Campbell after he was in a car accident Sunday morning.

"The vehicle Campbell was driving struck a light pole at a considerable rate of speed," Jordan said. "As a result, Campbell was transported to a local hospital, where he still remains in critical condition and is unresponsive."

Campbell wrecked his car on I-44 near Sheridan within 15 minutes of another reported assault.

Police aren’t sure whether Campbell was involved in an eighth attack at this point. He served more than seven years in prison for the crimes he committed in Oklahoma City.
