School Year Over because of Storm Damage

By Associated Press

Little Axe, OK – School year in Little Axe likely over after storm

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The academic year likely is over for students in the Little Axe district after a tornado cut a path through the middle of their school complex in northeastern Cleveland County.

Little Axe Superintendent Barry Damrill said Thursday the district has been given an exception by the state Board of Education that would allow the district to cancel the rest of the school year.

Education Department spokeswoman Shelly Hickman says the state board has not yet received a formal request from the district school board for such an exception, but that such a request likely would be granted.

According to the district's website, the final day of school had been scheduled for May 20.

The tornado on Monday wiped out a building that housed Damrill's office and caused significant damage to the district's football stadium.
