School Furlough Plan

Tulsa, OK – TPS Furlough Days for 12-Month Employees

On Monday, December 7, the TPS Board of Education approved a furlough plan to address part of the budget shortfall for the 2009-2010 school year. The plan includes making December 21-23 paid holidays for TPS employees on 12-month contracts. All TPS buildings will be closed December 21 - January 1 for Winter Break.

12-month employees will take one, two or three furlough days based on salary range.
1 furlough day for those earning less than $30,000 annualized salary
2 furlough days for those earning $30,001-$70,000 annualized salary
3 furlough days for those earning more than $70,000 annualized salary

The following dates will become furlough days. TPS buildings will be closed on these days.
February 15, 2010 - President's Day
March 19, 2010 - Friday of Spring Break
May 31, 2010 - Memorial Day
The district estimates savings of $325,000 for three furlough days under this plan.
State lawmakers have already cut the district's funding by $2.5 million this fiscal year. If state revenues do not rebound and if rainy day funds are not tapped to augment school budgets, legislators could cut an additional $3-$8 million. Employee salaries and benefits account for approximately 85 percent of the overall budget.
Additional furlough dates may be recommended and may be extended to other groups of employees. If additional furlough dates are necessary, those dates will be brought to the Board of Education for approval.
More details will be provided to TPS employees concerning this furlough plan.
