Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. interstate closed because of hazardous spill

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Authorities say Interstate 40 has been shut down in both directions because a semi carrying a hazardous material has overturned.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says the interstate was closed just after 1 p.m. Saturday after the truck overturned and spilled calcium carbide. Officials say calcium carbide is highly flammable when wet.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Betsy Randolph says she hadn't received any reports of injuries as a result of the initial accident.

Officials shut down eastbound lanes of I-40 at the Kilpatrick Turnpike and westbound lanes at Council and Morgan roads.

Motorists were urged to find an alternate route.
