The dust has settled in Tulsa International Airport’s Concourse A.
A brass band played in the renovated concourse. It’s the most comprehensive renovation of the airport since it was built, involving 44 contractors, costing $21.7 million and taking 18 months.
The overhaul brings efficient restrooms and lighting, new shopping and dining options, a business center, and hundreds of outlets — including USB ports and wireless Powermats — for device charging.
"This newly renovated concourse will provide the business community with a comfortable and convenient place to work and recharge while traveling, putting Tulsa in a prime position to attract both business and pleasure travelers, increasing revenue to our economy and showcasing Tulsa as a great place to live, work and play," said Brien Thorstenberg with the Tulsa Regional Chamber.
A new military lounge is another amenity. Airport Director Jeff Mulder said it’s centrally located, bigger and has more seating.
"A lot of service members travel, whether they're going on a deployment or coming home from deployment," Mulder said. "It really gives them a place to go with their families to spend a little private time, and it provides information and services."
The airport partnered with Folds of Honor on the Cpl. Jared M. Shoemaker Military and Veteran’s Resource Lounge. Since 2009, 17,000 veterans and current service members visited the old lounge.
The airport’s focus is now on a $26 million parking garage expansion that should be finished next summer.
