Rabies Warning

Norman, OK – Norman officials warn of increased rabies risk

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Officials in Norman are urging pet owners to keep up with their animals' vaccinations because of an increased risk of rabies.

Norman police said Tuesday that recent drought conditions have more wild animals than usual in neighborhoods to look for food.

Capt. Tom Easley says members of the public have reported increased sightings of skunks, which can carry the rabies virus.

The Oklahoman reports that the virus flourishes in the brain, spinal fluid and saliva of infected animals, and may be transmitted to other animals or possibly to people through bites, mucous membranes and fresh openings on the skin.

Oklahoma law requires all dogs, cats and ferrets to receive immunization against rabies. Officials say horses and other valuable livestock should also be vaccinated.
