Tulsa, OK – Key science in poultry case featured in journal
TULSA, Okla. (AP) Science relied upon by Oklahoma in a lawsuit against Arkansas poultry companies and dismissed as "junk" by critics is now featured in a leading journal.
The work by University of South Florida professor Valerie Harwood has been published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology and accepted in the journal of Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
In Oklahoma's lawsuit Harwood looked for a connection between bacteria in the Illinois River watershed and the tons of chicken waste produced by poultry farms in the area. But a judge agreed with the poultry industry's argument that her methods were unsound because they had not been published in a peer-review journal.
The industry stood by those claims Thursday saying Harwood failed to disclose that her work had been rejected as unreliable.
The lawsuit remains under review.
