Police have notified the relatives of the four women killed in a shooting yesterday in an apartment near 61st and Peoria.

Their names are Julie Jackson, 55, Misty Nunley, 33, and Rebecca Powel and Kayetie Melchor, both 23, who are believed to be twins.

The name of a four-year-old boy, who was also found, without injury, inside the apartment, has not been released, nor has his relationship to the women.

Police received a tip around midday yesterday from someone who had entered the apartment to check on the women and found them shot inside.

Officers said they believe the shooting to have occurred within an hour or so of police receiving the tip.

Since then, investigators have been canvassing neighbors, taking CrimeStoppers tips and searching for leads.

“Homicide investigators were basically here all last night,” said Officer Leland Ashley. “Some went away for maybe an hour, two hours of sleep, and they’re back at it this morning.”

“The investigation is very active and ongoing at this time,” he said.

Ashley says police won’t release details of the crime scene at this point.

“You don’t want to give up information that the suspect could possibly obtain,” he said.

Additionally, he said, releasing information too early could taint otherwise good information from witnesses.

“We don’t want to draw conclusions that ultimately might be the wrong conclusions,” Ashley said, “so we’re going to take our time before we release any information.”

“Detectives are beating the bushes, as well as patrol officers and the gang unit,” he said. “I don’t want to say whether the community should be in fear or not be in fear, but we do have an individual or individuals who killed four people, and I think that in itself is enough to be concerned about.”
