Panel Hears Abuse Allegations at Veterans Center

KWGS News File Photo

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A military veteran says he's been physically abused at Oklahoma's Norman Veterans Center and staff members tried to intimidate him.

Mike Simmons spoke Tuesday to the House Veterans and Military Affairs Committee that's conducting an interim study into allegations of abuse at veterans centers statewide. Simmons says his abuse allegations went unreported to the state Department of Human Services and he wants DHS to have oversight of the centers.

No one from the Norman veterans center appeared at the meeting. Officials with some of the state's six other centers said they have policies requiring abuse allegations be reported to DHS.

Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Wesselhoft said he doesn't dispute Simmons' allegation — but that there was a conflict between Simmons and center officials that resulted in a "turbulent relationship."
