Ozone Alert for Friday

By AP

Tulsa, OK – Ozone alert in effect for Oklahoma City, Tulsa

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality has issued an ozone alert for the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metropolitan areas.

Environmental officials say the alert will be in effect for Friday because conditions are favorable for an unhealthy buildup of ozone. Ozone occurs when the sun reacts with pollutants from cars and industrial plants at or near the surface of the earth.

Ozone in the upper levels of the atmosphere is beneficial in screening the sun's radiation but is harmful near the ground, particularly to those with respiratory problems.

Officials are urging those with asthma and other breathing ailments to limit physical exertion and outdoor activity.

Residents are encouraged to help out by carpooling, avoiding unnecessary trips, refueling their vehicles at night and refraining from the use of gas-powered mowers.
