Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. House passes presidential 'birther' bill
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma House has approved legislation requiring presidential candidates to prove their citizenship before appearing on a state primary election ballot. The measure passed the same day that President Barack Obama made public his detailed birth certificate.
Without debate, the House Wednesday evening voted 77-13 for the measure by Rep. Sue Tibbs of Tulsa and sent it to the Senate for further consideration.
The measure requires candidates for most public offices to provide proof of identity and eligibility to hold the public office they are seeking. Candidates for president must provide proof of identity and U.S. citizenship to the State Election Board, which would make the documents available to the public.
Obama released copies of his birth certificate on Wednesday in response to questions raised about his citizenship by so-called "birthers".
