Oklahoma Voter Registration Surges Prior to Deadline

Oklahoma Election Board officials say voter registration in the state has surged as the deadline nears for registering to vote in the Nov. 8 presidential election.

Election Board spokesman Bryan Dean says that as of Friday morning, there were more than 2.11 million registered voters in the state, an increase of more than 136,000 voters since Jan. 15, when there were almost 1.98 million voters.

Republicans make up 964,043 of the state's electorate compared to 880,130 registered Republicans in January. There are 846,419 Democrats compared to 832,059 Democrats at the beginning of the year.

Dean says registered independents have experienced an increase in registration of more than 10 percent this year, rising from 266,605 in January to 302,024 Friday morning.

Friday is the deadline for registered for the general election.
