The Oklahoma City Council on Tuesday approved a route for the first phase of a streetcar line as part of theMAPS 3series of projects.

The 4.5-mile route framework connectsBricktown, Midtown, and a future convention center and downtown park also approved as part of MAPS 3.

“The consultants received comments from the public and input from the MAPS 3 subcommittees, stakeholders, City staff and the Central Oklahoma Transportation and Parking Authority to determine the route,” MAPS Program Manager David Todd said in a news release. “They also analyzed current and projected data on downtown housing, employment and future development.”

Design options for portions of the route in Midtown and along Broadway still have to be determined. As many as six streetcars will share roadways in Downtown Oklahoma City with cyclists and other vehicles. Developers expect the project to cost nearly $129 million and begin operations in 2017.
