OKC School District Defends Proposed Discipline Plan

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A revised code of conduct proposed by the Oklahoma City school district is being heavily criticized by the teachers union.

The discipline policy outlines a plan that calls for problem students to go through increasing levels of intervention aimed at keeping them in school and reducing suspensions. Calls for the revision came after a recent audit found glaring inconsistencies in student discipline.

Union President Ed Allen said at Wednesday's board meeting that the policy will cause teachers to bear the burden of chronic misbehavior. However, Teri Bell, the executive director of student support services, says teachers will be trained to build relationships with children who tend to act out.

The school district said it has no plans to implement the revised code before the start of the coming school year.
