OKC to Promote 514 Students Who Failed Test

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — More than 500 Oklahoma City third-graders who failed a state reading test will be promoted to fourth grade after receiving exemptions.

Oklahoma City Public Schools officials announced Tuesday that the exemptions were granted for various reasons, including learning disabilities, English as a second language or satisfactory performance on an alternate test.

Earlier this year, the Oklahoma Department of Education said that 16 percent of third graders failed the reading test statewide and wouldn't be eligible for promotion unless an exemption was granted or the students pass an alternative test.

The Oklahoman reports that the Oklahoma City district will retain 636 third-grade students who did not qualify for an exemption, unless they pass assessments this summer.
