OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A Democratic state senator from Oklahoma City is expected to announce next week her plans to run for the open U.S. Senate seat.

State Senator Connie Johnson told The Associated Press on Wednesday she's seriously contemplating a run and plans to make an official announcement on Tuesday.

Democratic state Representative Anastasia Pittman announced Wednesday that she plans to run for Johnson's seat, another indication that Johnson is likely to launch a U.S. Senate campaign.

Johnson already has announced the creation of an exploratory committee and said she feels positive about running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated early by Republican U.S. Senator Tom Coburn.

A proponent of legalized marijuana, Johnson has become a hero to Oklahoma's pro-marijuana movement.
