Officials Rename Vinita Service Plaza

KWGS News

VINITA, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma officials are changing the name of the former Vinita Service Plaza to Will Rogers Archway.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority announced the new name Tuesday. The organization teamed up with the state's tourism department, which hosted an online survey for naming the plaza.

Will Rogers was born in 1879 in Oklahoma. He was a cowboy, actor and humorist.

The plaza is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation. It was originally built in 1950s and is located near Vinita.

The renovation, which began last June, is expected to cost $14.6 million. It will house two restaurants and a convenience store. All of the glass in the arched part of the building will be replaced.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority says its completion is set for the end of this year.
