Tulsa, OK – Okla. nursing student receives 'hero' award

TULSA, Okla. (AP) A nursing student from Tulsa is being honored by emergency officials after she performed CPR on a boy who nearly drowned in a backyard swimming pool.

Oral Roberts University student Montika Collins was presented Wednesday with the Tulsa Emergency Medical Services Authority's "Everyday Hero" award.

EMSA officials say Collins was at a Fourth of July party in Tulsa when a 4-year-old boy went under water at an apartment complex pool and failed to resurface.

After the boy was pulled from the pool, Collins found no pulse or breathing and began performing CPR. By the time paramedics arrived the boy was alert and breathing on his own.

She was presented the award Wednesday at EMSA's headquarters in Tulsa.
