Novel Development Announced for Downtown Tulsa

Nelson Stowe Development

Coming soon to downtown Tulsa: The Boxyard.

"It's a retail and entertainment center that's built out of repurposed shipping containers," said Casey Stowe with Nelson Stowe Development. "These are containers that have come across the ocean maybe once, maybe multiple times."

The company plans to build The Boxyard at Third Street and Frankfort Avenue.

"It's a piece of property that's been held by the Tulsa Development Authority for quite some time," Stowe said. "The problem with the property is that it's not really big. It's not really an efficient size to site a building on."

Stowe said he got the idea after seeing a larger-scale version in London three years ago.

Retailers looking for new space usually have to work with at least 1,000 square feet.

"These are going to be 320 square feet, and so it allows somebody to take advantage of all the excitement and energy that's going on downtown right now without a huge financial commitment," Stowe said.

Nelson Stowe is currently involved in several downtown projects, including redeveloping the Gates Hardware building across from ONEOK Field.

The Boxyard will have a central courtyard and several open decks. The plan is to have restaurant space and live entertainment there as well.

Although the development has been announced, the Tulsa Development Authority holds the property and hasn’t voted on the idea yet. It will do so tomorrow.
