Next Time on ATJ: "Live at Newport" Recordings for the 60th Anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival

This weekend, August 1st through the 3rd, the fabled Newport Jazz Festival will occur in Newport, Rhode Island. It's the 60th anniversary for this great American outdoor concert soiree, which was originally presented as the "First Annual American Jazz Festival" in 1954. (The complete line-up and further details for this year's Newport Jazz Festival can be accessed here, by the way.)

So, the second-hour theme on the next edition of All This Jazz --- airing on Saturday the 2nd from 10pm till midnight, right here on Public Radio 89.5 KWGS, and streaming online in that same time-frame at PublicRadioTulsa.org --- will be "Live at Newport." We'll hear classic performances recorded "live" at this gala festival by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and other greats -- as well as more recent "Live at Newport" documents by the trumpeters Christian Scott and Dave Douglas. And in the first hour of our program, we'll dig recent recordings by the fine guitarist Steve Cardenas as well as an interesting new brass quartet known as The Westerlies.

It'll be downright neat-o, jazz fans. And uber-tuneful. Hope you can join us.

(The fine print: All This Jazz -- for which playlist data can be accessed here [please scroll down] -- airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5, from 10pm until midnight. We always thereafter offer a 7pm re-airing of the program on Sunday evening, on Jazz 89.5-2, which is our station's all-jazz HD Radio channel. Each week, we spin modern jazz, both recent and classic, across a range of styles. And the second half of our program, beginning at 11pm, invariably carries a theme. Also, for those so inclined: All This Jazz now has a Facebook page.)

Scott Gregory started working at Public Radio Tulsa in 2006; he started listening to public radio circa 1980, when he and NPR both marked their tenth birthdays (although only one of them commemorated the occasion with a party at Skate World). Scott became this radio station's Operations Director in the summer of 2023; he also hosts and programs All This Jazz, which airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5-1 from 9pm till midnight.
