Tulsa, Oklahoma – On today's show, we speak with Piper Kerman, author of "Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison." Tonight (Tuesday the 29th) at 7:30pm, in the John Rogers Hall on the TU campus, Kerman will deliver a talk based on this book, which details her thirteen months in prison --- eleven of them at the federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, where she met a surprising and varied community of women living under exceptional circumstances. In her book, Kerman fully describes being locked up in a place with its own codes of behavior and arbitrary hierarchies, where a practical joke is as common as an unprovoked fight, and where the uneasy relationship between prisoner and jailer is constantly and unpredictably recalibrated. Kerman's talk is presented by the TU Department of Women's and Gender Series as a part of its Women's History Month series of lectures focusing on women and incarceration.
