The Meth Mess

Oklahoma City, OK – Prescriptions sought for certain cold medicines
KEN MILLER,Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Despite the defeat in a Senate subcommittee of a bill that would require prescriptions for cold medicines that contain pseudoephedrine supporters of the idea say they'll continue to fight for the requirement.

The bill by Republican Sen. Kim David failed on a 3-3 vote Wednesday in the subcommittee but a virtually identical bill by Rep. Sue Tibbs is pending in the House.

Supporters say requiring prescriptions for the medications would reduce methamphetamine production in the state. Pseudoephedrine is a key ingredient in the manufacturing of the drug.

Opponents such as the Oklahoma State Medical Association say other laws such as a system linking Oklahoma to adjoining states to track who purchases the medications would be more effective.
