City councilors and Route 66 boosters announce a slate of events for Memorial Day weekend.

The inaugural Route 66 Patriot Car Show is May 23, and it starts with a cruise along the historic road from East Central High to Crystal City Shopping Center on Southwest Boulevard.

"We were asked by Folds of Honor to really promote our city, and the city council and the mayor, we appreciate, love our veterans," said District 2 Councilor Jeannie Cue. "We really feel like this is going to be a continuous event in our city."

Former City Councilor Skip Steele sees the event as an opportunity.

"We all know that Tulsa's the most beautiful city, and now we're going to step up and show how patriotic Tulsa is when we put on this free cruise across Route 66," Steele said. "And I'm looking forward to Tulsans coming out with American flags and really celebrating."

The weekend begins early with a carnival at Crystal City Shopping Center on Southwest Boulevard that runs May 21–24. There's a patriotic pet costume contest May 23.

"Oklahoma has more live miles of Route 66 left than any other state, so we have a major asset here that can be built upon, and we really do want this to be an annual event," said District 6 Councilor Connie Dodson.

Proceeds from the events will benefit Folds of Honor and southwest Tulsa community organizations.
