Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. state superintendent names top teacher

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A Byng reading teacher has been named the state's teacher of the year.

State Superintendent Sandy Garrett announced Elizabeth Smith as winner of the teacher of the year award during a ceremony Tuesday morning at the State Fair of Oklahoma.

Smith is the 7th grade reading teacher at Byng Junior High School and she also coaches basketball. Smith, an East Central University graduate, has taught at Byng for nine years and has worked in the education field for 17 years.

Smith will represent Oklahoma in a national competition and receive about $50,000 in cash and prizes, including the use of a car for a year.

The other finalists were Brandi Dickson; Leesa Dickson; Terri Foughty; Carol Hunsperger; Karen Watson Lewis; Kristi Lovett; Lynette Miller; Kendra Roulet; Kari Steele; Fran Stellman and Meredith Wronowski.
