Meet Dr. John Hendrix, Director of Palliative Care and Hospice Services at St. John Medical Center

Sep 14, 2015

What exactly is palliative care, and to what degree does it differ from hospice? And why have more and more hospitals around the nation started offering palliative care programs, especially over the past decade or so? On this edition of StudioTulsa on Health, we present an engaging discussion with Dr. John Hendrix, the newly named Medical Director of Palliative Care and Hospice Services at St. John Medical Center here in Tulsa. Interestingly, Dr. Hendrix has an extensive background in internal medicine and ICU work, and he speaks of how both of these have influenced his thinking about -- and his approaches to -- palliative care. He also discusses the new palliative care unit that he started leading at St. John earlier this summer, and reflects with guest host Dr. John Schumann on a certain case, from years ago, wherein the two doctors had differing views on how best to treat a 95-year-old patient. (Please note that you can learn more about palliative care at St. John at this link.)
