Webbers Falls, OK – Webbers Falls mayor facing 15 felonies
WEBBERS FALLS, Okla. (AP) The mayor of Webbers Falls in eastern Oklahoma has surrendered to police on 15 felony charges of embezzlement.
Mayor Jewell Horne surrendered Friday afternoon on the charges filed a day earlier by District Attorney Larry Moore. A hearing was set for 9 a.m. Dec. 28.
The charges allege Horne illegally accepted $229,460 from the town between June 1, 1995, and Dec. 10, 2009. She was a town trustee for all that time and mayor for the majority of the time.
The charges say Horne was paid a salary without an ordinance on file showing the salary had been approved before the term of office began. State law and the state constitution prohibit elected officials from receiving salary increases not approved before their election to the current term.
