Tulsa, OK – Today Safe Kids Tulsa along with Marshall Elementary School promoted safe walking for local school children on International Walk to School Day. Today's walk is the 12th anniversary for Marshall, and the walk is a national event taking place in over 4,000 schools across the country.
"On International Walk to School Day, parents and caregivers both teach and model safe pedestrian behavior," said Jenny Rollins of Safe Kids Tulsa Area. Police officer J.C. Murray monitored morning and evening traffic yesterday to see that 92% of drivers drove over the school speed limit in the morning hours around Marshall Elementary. "With two kids hit in the last week, it is important to be careful along school roads," he said. And while most parents are the ones speeding, he also caught a school bus going 34 miles per hour while driving in the neighborhood streets.
Amy Putman, the community school coordinator, said that around "95% of kids walk to school at Marshall Elementary, and we have to be able to count on our kids to account for their own safety." With the loss of crossing guards throughout Tulsa due to budget cuts, it is necessary for students to know how to safely walk to school.
