Liquor Law Changes

By AP

Oklahoma City, OK – Oklahoma's proposed beer law would change market

(Information in the following story is from: Tulsa World, http://www.tulsaworld.com)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) The beer market in Oklahoma may be in for a significant change if the sale of strong is approved for convenience and grocery stores.

The Tulsa World reports that 89 percent of beer purchased in Oklahoma has an alcohol content of 3.2 percent, the only kind it's legal to sell in grocery and convenience stores.

The Beer Institute says Oklahoma accounts for 55 percent of the nation's sales in 3.2 beer.

But the appeal of strong beer is growing in the state, with sales up 32 percent in 2010. In that period, low-point beer sales fell by 4 percent.

Two bills are being developed in the Legislature to allow broader sales of strong beer, which could change the landscape for Oklahoma beer marketers.
