South African cast members, from Disney’s The Lion King will perform a benefit concert of African stories at Tulsa’s Greenwood Cultural Center on Monday June 24th at 6:00pm in support of the center. Among the selections will be the debut of a song written in honor of Nelson Mandela.
Sen. Jabar Shumate is helping coordinate the event and invites the public to come support Tulsa’s historic cultural center.
“The Greenwood Cultural Center has long been a place that has cultivated the artistic abilities of young people and honored the history of the district,” said Shumate, D-Tulsa. “I invite the public to come support this special benefit concert that will give young people the opportunity to work alongside professional actors and inspire them to greater heights but most importantly will benefit one of our community’s most treasured places, The Greenwood Cultural Center.”
The concert, entitled Simunye, meaning “we are one” in Zulu, will feature performances of both traditional and modern African children’s stories and music in the authentic South African style. The vocalists and storytellers for the event are Tshidi Manye, Portia Magwaza, Vusi B. Mhlongo, Sihle Ngema, Ntomb’Khona Dlamini, and Electra Weston.
