THE LATEST: Admiral Twin Fire

By KWGS News

Tulsa, OK – Fire destroys Okla drive-in seen in Coppola film

TULSA, Okla. (AP) A large fire has destroyed the screens at a Tulsa drive-in movie theater where scenes from the movie, "The Outsiders," were filmed.

Firefighters were notified just before 2 p.m. Friday of the blaze at the Admiral Twin Drive-in. The screens were destroyed in about 30 minutes.

Fire Capt. Michael Baker says no one was injured in the fire, which appeared to have started on the north side of the screen structure.

Drive-in operator Blake Smith says the theater's tower wasn't insured because it was a wooden structure.

The drive-in's website says the Admiral Twin opened as a single screen in 1951, then expanded to two screens a year later.

The theater was featured in the 1983 Francis Ford Coppola movie, "The Outsiders," which was based on the novel by Tulsa author S.E. Hinton.
