Labor Day Raft Race is Back

For the first time in a generation, Tulsans will be floating on the Arkansas River this Labor Day.  From the 1970s to early 90s, a raft race was held on the Arkansas River each Labor Day. The civic event is being resurrected to draw attention to the river.

One of this year's sponsors in the Public Service Company of Oklahoma. The company has two power generators on the Arkansas River. The utility's Stan Whiteford says it will be donating some of the water to help fill the river. He says the company will make 10-hours of water available to float the rafts.

The race will start in Sand Springs and proceed to Tulsa on Labor Day, September 7th. Organizers say so many people are taking part, they have had to close raft-registration.
