Judge Sets Prelim for Church Bomb Plot Suspect

MIAMI, Okla. (AP) — An Ottawa County judge has scheduled a preliminary hearing for an Illinois man charged with plotting to attack dozens of churches in northeastern Oklahoma.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Ellis said Monday that Special Judge William Culver scheduled a Dec. 3 hearing for 23-year-old Gregory Arthur Weiler II.

Weiler was arrested on Oct. 4 and is being held without bond on charges of threatening to use an explosive device and violating the Oklahoma Antiterrorism Act.

Investigators say they found bomb-making materials in Weiler's room in a Miami motel along with a list of 48 local churches and an outline of a plan to plant bombs.

Members of Weiler's family say he has a long history of mental illness. His attorney, Andrew Meloy, did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
