Oklahoma City, OK – Court denies motion to dismiss bribery charge

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A former state senator accused of accepting a bribe has lost her appeal to have the case thrown out of Oklahoma County District Court.

The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals denied former Sen. Debbe Leftwich's request to dismiss a felony charge of soliciting or accepting a bribe. The ruling, handed down on Thursday, affirms an April 15 decision by Special Judge Stephen Alcorn.

Prosecutors have accused Republican Rep. Randy Terrill of offering Leftwich, a Democrat, an $80,000-a-year job at the state Medical Examiner's Office in exchange for her not seeking re-election to her south Oklahoma City seat, clearing the way for a Republican state lawmaker to run.

Leftwich and Terrill both face felony bribery charges. Both have denied wrongdoing. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled on Aug. 8.
