Iraq is Changing

Lawton, OK – Iraq has changed, returning Okla. officer says

LAWTON, Okla. (AP) An Army officer returning to Oklahoma from his third deployment to Iraq says there were big differences between what he encountered in 2006 and what's going on now.

Lt. Col. Andy Weatherstone said the Iraqis have made progress in assuming responsibility for running their country.

Weatherstone and 484 other members of Bravo and Charlie Batteries, 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery, plus the 66th Forward Support Company, returned to Fort Sill this weekend.

Weatherstone's unit served as military police, guarding detainees at Camp Bucca.

"(Our) biggest thing was encouraging (the detainees) to become better Iraqi citizens when they're released," he said.
