Inmate Walks Away

Tulsa, OK – 34-year-old Okla. inmate walks away from work site

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) Authorities say a 34-year-old Muskogee County inmate has escaped after walking away from a work site.

The inmate, Shannon D. Smith, escaped about 12:30 p.m. Monday. He was being held at the Muskogee County Work Center, which is a pre-release center for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. Work Center employee Angie Pigeon says Smith "had been a model inmate" before his escape.

Smith had been transferred to the center from the Oklahoma Community Corrections Center in Oklahoma City in April.

DOC spokesman Jerry Massie says Smith was convicted in Muskogee County in January 2009 of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm after former conviction of a felony. Massie says Smith received two five-year sentences.

DOC records indicate Smith was scheduled to be released in April 2012.
